Tong Ren Tang: A 1669 Beijing House With the Most Built-Out Overseas Network

Founded in Beijing in 1669, Tong Ren Tang runs a self-described 160+ store network across 26 countries and two official English websites — the most developed overseas footprint of the three houses on this site — and shares the Angong Niuhuang Wan product category with Guangyuyuan.

Tong Ren Tang (同仁堂) was founded in Beijing in 1669, making it the oldest-founded of the three houses covered on this site. It also has, by a wide margin, the most developed overseas presence of the three.

Angong Niuhuang Wan (安宫牛黄丸), one of Tong Ren Tang's best-known products and the subject of a later section on this page, is counted among China's famous protected formulas — part of the old tradition popularly known as the eight great secret formulas (八大保密配方).

Two official English websites

Tong Ren Tang operates a two-layer official English web presence:

  • cm.tongrentang.com/en — Beijing Tong Ren Tang Chinese Medicine Company Ltd, the Hong Kong-based overseas development platform. It was set up in Hong Kong in 2004, listed on the GEM board in 2013, and moved to the Main Board in 2018.
  • trtusa.com — an independently branded US site, its page title translating to "Beijing Tong Ren Tang US Official Website | TRT USA."

A self-described 160+ store, 26-country network

By the company's own account, Tong Ren Tang operates more than 160 stores across 26 countries and regions. Specific locations reported include New York (Manhattan and Flushing), California (Los Angeles and San Francisco, entering the US market in 2016), and Vancouver, Canada; in Europe, Warsaw (its first European store, 2012), a TCM clinic in Prague, an R&D company in Switzerland, and a Netherlands operation gained through acquisition; and in New Zealand, seven stores gained by acquiring a local TCM business.

This figure is the company's own disclosure, not an independently audited count.

English-language media

English coverage found in this research comes mainly from Chinese official or semi-official English outlets (China Daily, China Today, China Development Gateway) and corporate outreach placements (for example, a Malay Mail media-outreach section, and Laotian Times). No coverage from independent Western mainstream outlets such as the New York Times, BBC, or Reuters turned up in this round.

Its English name also appears in more than one form: "Tong Ren Tang" (the traditional spaced official form), "Tongrentang" (a run-together form adopted more recently by official channels), and the abbreviation "TRT." An older Wade-Giles-style form, "T'ung Jen T'ang," is a plausible historical form for a name this old but was not found in actual use during this research.

Angong Niuhuang Wan: shared ground with Guangyuyuan

Tong Ren Tang and Guangyuyuan both produce Angong Niuhuang Wan (安宫牛黄丸), and this site presents that as a neutral, side-by-side fact rather than a comparison of which house's version is better — see the disclaimer above.

Search interest tells a small story here too: English-language searches pairing "Beijing Tong Ren Tang" with Angong Niuhuang Wan show measurable volume, while an equivalent Guangyuyuan-branded pairing does not — a sign that Tong Ren Tang has built more brand-plus-product recognition abroad. It isn't a claim about which house's version is more authentic or effective — see the disclaimer above.

For the broader Angong Niuhuang Wan naming and regional-demand picture — including why Indonesia is the largest single market for the English product-name searches — see the Guangyuyuan page.
