Guilingji (龟龄集) is the product most closely identified with Guangyuyuan's long history. It has been part of the house's story since Guangshengyi, the Taigu, Shanxi apothecary that opened in 1541, and it is the product behind Guangyuyuan's earliest documented overseas trade.

Historical timeline

  • 1541 — Guangshengyi opens in Taigu, Shanxi; Guilingji is the core product from this origin point.
  • Around 1900 — According to an official old-brand museum record, a wave of demand for Guilingji spread through Nanyang (Southeast Asia) during an epidemic period, promoted by Guangshengyuan, the house's direct operating predecessor at the time.
  • 1915 — A Guilingji sold under the "Yuan" (远) brand mark won an award at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition.
  • 1916 — Guangshengyuan formally opens a Hong Kong branch and begins selling Guilingji from Hong Kong into Nanyang.
  • 1928 — Guilingji exports reach roughly 40,000 bottles, the peak of the private-ownership era.
  • 1942 — Even after wartime contraction, the house still retained five branches, including the one in Hong Kong.

Guangshengyuan (广升远) — the 1885 predecessor firm that ran the 1900 Nanyang promotion, the 1916 Hong Kong branch, and the 1928 export peak — is a distinct historical name from the modern Guangyuyuan (广誉远) brand and company. Guangyuyuan inherits this history; it did not happen under today's company name.

Modern search demand: strong history, small current footprint

Despite that trade history, today's measurable English-language interest in Guilingji is small — the modern romanized spelling draws only a trickle of searches worldwide, concentrated in a handful of markets. The Chinese-language term 龟龄集 shows a larger — though still modest — global volume, with small pockets of interest in Hong Kong, Singapore, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

Older transliterations of the name — Gui Ling Ji, Kwei Ling Chi, Kuei Ling Chi — appear in historical English-language reference material but do not register measurable search volume in current tools. They are useful for finding older sources, not for estimating current demand.

In short: Guilingji carries the strongest documented history of any product on this site — a real export story that once reached Nanyang. Its name doesn't draw much search traffic in English today, but its history speaks for itself, and the 1928 export figure describes 1928, not today.
