Guangyuyuan: A 1541 Lineage, a Real Nanyang Export History, and a Quiet Overseas Present
Guangyuyuan's predecessor houses ran a real Guangzhou–Hong Kong–Nanyang trade network from the 1820s onward, peaking at 40,000 bottles of Guilingji exported in 1928 — but today's brand and website have almost no measurable overseas footprint.

Guangyuyuan (广誉远) is not a brand that invented an overseas story recently. Official historical sources document a real, continuous trading network running from Taigu, Shanxi through Guangzhou and Hong Kong into Nanyang (Southeast Asia), operating under a series of predecessor names long before "Guangyuyuan" existed as a company name.
Getting the lineage right
The name over the door has changed more than once across nearly five centuries. Guangyuyuan the brand did not exist in 1541 — the lineage runs through several names before arriving at today's company:
- Guangshengsi hao (广盛号) — the 1541 origin point in Taigu, Shanxi, where Guilingji became the house's core product.
- Guangshengju (广升聚) — the wholesale medicinal-materials network that emerged after an 1808 reorganization; it opened a Guangzhou branch in 1827 to import southern medicinal materials and ship them north.
- Guangshengwei / Guangshengyu (广升蔚 / 广升誉) — later branch names that split off from the same network.
- Guangshengyuan (广升远) — established in 1885, this was the direct operating house behind the 1900 Nanyang promotion, the 1916 Hong Kong branch, and the 1928 export peak described below.
- Guangyuyuan (广誉远) — the modern brand and company name that formed through later public–private reorganization and subsequent corporate history, inheriting this lineage rather than having lived through it under its current name.
In short: Guangyuyuan's predecessor Guangshengyuan, and the wider Taigu "Guang" merchant network behind it, traded in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Nanyang very early. Today's Guangyuyuan brand inherits that historical asset — it did not create it under its current name.**

Modern demand belongs to the product name, not the brand name yet
The single clearest pattern in current search data is this: overseas interest today attaches to the product name Angong Niuhuang Wan (安宫牛黄丸), not to the Guangyuyuan brand name.
- The Guangyuyuan brand name itself — in Chinese, traditional Chinese, and romanized form — shows only a small global search volume, on the order of a few dozen monthly searches at most, concentrated in Hong Kong.
- By contrast, "Angong Niuhuang Wan" (the modern romanized product name) shows a global monthly search volume in the low thousands, with roughly two-thirds of that volume coming from Indonesia, and further pockets in Vietnam, the United States, and Singapore. The older transliteration "An Kung Niu Huang Wan" is smaller but still measurable, and is also concentrated in Indonesia — meaning a search strategy that only checks the modern spelling would miss part of the Southeast Asian demand.
- This regional concentration in Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore lines up — at the level of the broader Nanyang region, not as a country-by-country causal claim — with the historical Guangzhou–Hong Kong–Nanyang trade route described above.
A protected formula, guarded within the house
Guiling Ji and Dingkun Dan's formulas and manufacturing processes are protected as state-secret formulas — part of the same old tradition, popularly known in China as the eight great secret formulas (八大保密配方), that also covers houses like Pien Tze Huang. Angong Niuhuang Wan, the product-name category discussed above and also made by Tong Ren Tang, is counted among China's famous protected formulas as well.
A history worth telling on its own terms
Guangyuyuan's overseas history is a real, documented chapter — not a modern marketing invention. Its overseas presence today is far quieter than in that 1928 peak: the company's own 2025 statement and the absence of a current overseas retail network both point to a Nanyang chapter that belongs more to history than to the present moment.
